Chapters & Learning Objectives

1. Upper Extremity Assessment and Treatment

In this chapter, participants will be given the tools to analyze abnormal movement patterns of the upper extremity, specifically with identifying muscle recruitment patterns and compensation strategies for movement. Special emphasis will be placed on learning neuromuscular re-education techniques for muscle recruitment and movement initiation, as well as on the construction of a home exercise program that will promote normal movement patterns of the upper extremity using visual and tactile cues.

2. Dizziness Handicap Inventory, and Confirmation and Treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

Join occupational therapist Danielle Keyser as she introduces and discusses the importance of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, the Dix-Hallpike Test for the confirmation of BPPV, and the Epley-maneuver for the treatment of BPPV. Upon completion of this chapter, participants should be able to recognize the indicators of vestibular dysfunction.

3. Functional Mobility and Home Modifications for the Bathroom

Home modifications are essential for improving functional mobility in the geriatric patient. In this chapter, participants will learn the importance and clinical reasoning for home modifications prescribed to Hubert, our case study patient with a case of dizziness and immobility. Special emphasis will be placed on understanding the reasoning for grab bar placement to decrease fall risk, safety precautions using suction cup grab bars, and information regarding how to access gross motor movements and areas for remediation with ambulation, tub bench transfer, and commode transfer.
