He writes, “When I was a child I used to keep aquarium fish. Before my father built me a large shed to accommodate the tanks, I had a few tanks kept in my bedroom. There was a time that I had to change the airpump to a more powerful but much more noisy one. It was quite troublesome at first, because when I lay in bed, I couldn’t not hear it. It was as if I had to tune into that terrible hum. But after a few days, I no longer noticed the incessant noise of the pump. Basically, I had adapted to the fact that the noise was supposed to be there and I no longer noticed it. I simply forgot.”
